Asian Pork Meatballs with Soy Garlic Dipping Sauce

This chile pepper gets its name from its origin. In Spanish, serrano is an adjective meaning “from the mountains” which is where it originated-in the mountains of Hildalgo, Mexico. The serrano is normally about twice as hot as Jalapeno (about 10,000 to 15,000 Scoville units). It is the second most popular chile pepper in Mexico. This chile is used mostly for salsas but can also be used in soups, sauces, chili or stews. Try these as a hotter substitute for Jalapeno.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 lbs ground pork
1/2 cup finely minced onion
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp minced fresh ginger
1 tsp dried cilantro or 1 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
1 tsp roasted sesame seeds
1 egg beaten
2 serrano peppers, minced
1/2 cup plain dry bread crumbs
1 tsp fish sauce
1/4 cup oil for frying

For the dipping sauce:

3 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
1 tsp granulated garlic

Instructions:

Preheat oven to warm setting.

In a bowl combine all ingredients except oil and dipping sauce. Mix well. Roll into 20 meatballs.

Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Fry meatballs in batches until they are golden brown on all sides and cooked through. About 8-10 minutes total. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan. Transfer cooked meatballs to oven to keep warm while you finish cooking the remaining meatballs.

Serve with soy garlic dipping sauce.

Soy Garlic Dipping Sauce
Combine all ingredients in a bowl.

I served these as an entree with rice and stir-fried veggies but I also think these would be great served as an appetizer at any dinner party.

Makes about 20 meatballs.
